 Climate

   Syria has a moderate Mediterranean climate .It has four seasons and cloudless skies for the greater part of the year. Rain falls mainly in winter. The rainy days range between 80 - 100 days a year.
Temperature ranges between:
25 - 30 degrees centigrade in Fall
35 - 40 degrees centigrade in Summer
5 - 15 degrees centigrade in Winter
Winter is generally moderate, but wet on the Coast. Summer is hot and dry, but humid on the coast.
Recommendations:
1) Winter clothes are recommended between October and April .
2) Summer clothes are recommended between May and September .

Culture


The Arab Writers Union is in charge of promoting literary activity in Syria. Syria has some renowned poets such as Nizar Qabbani, Omar Abu Richa and Sulaiman Al-Issa, and novelists including Fuad El-Ghayeb, Chakib Jabiri, Abdus Salam Ojeili and Hanna Minah. The Ministry of Culture has created four national theater troupes; the National Theater Troupe, the Umayyad Troupe, theTravelling Theater Troupe and the Puppet Theater Troupe. Exhibitions, lectures and seminars, are held at Universities Museums and Cultural Centers. Painting and Sculpture by local and foreign Artists are exhibited in private Galleries throughout the Country .

In Syria; there are four prime universities :
1- Damascus University
2- Aleppo University (1958)
3- Al.Ba'ath University (Homs & Hama)
4- Tishreen University (Latakia & Tartus)

Music:
It is present in the celebration of important life events, such as birthdays, engagementsand wedding parties Popular music has its own accent in the countryside. Musical instruments are principally wind instruments; (Mizmar, Nai, Mejwez), percussion instruments;(Drum, Daff) and the king of the cords instruments, the Lute or (Aoud).

Economy



Economy in Syria consists of three sectors; the Public Sector, the Cooperative Sector, and the Private Sector. The economy in Syria depends on agriculture, industry, animal farming, and tourism.

Syria has Free Zones.

Prospects for Private and Foreign Investments are very wide.

The Syrian Government has issued many economical laws permitting:
- Foreign and Domestic Investments in various fields .
- Reduction of tax percentage on investments .
- Importing and Exporting many kinds of goods .

Currency:
- The unit of currency is the Syrian Pound ( Lira ) .
- Foreign currency and travelers' cheques can be freely exchanged , on presentation of passport, at Damascus Airport , at the frontier posts , in large hotels , and at the cities banks . (Open normally from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm).

Syria has a population of 17 million inhabitants in 1999, 85% concentrate in the west half of the Country. The population division in the counties is:
1) Damascus County 1,432,000 inhabitants
2) Damascus Countryside County 1,341,000 inhabitants
3) Aleppo County 4,039,000 inhabitants
4) Homs County 1,528,000 inhabitants
5) Hama County 1,531,000 inhabitants
6) Latakia County 992,000 inhabitants
7) Deir Ezzor County 1,093,000 inhabitants
8) Idlib County 1,396,000 inhabitants
9) Al-Hasakeh County 1,114,000 inhabitants
10) Ar-Raqqa County 656,000 inhabitants
11) As-Sweida County 398,000 inhabitants
12) Daraa County 755,000 inhabitants
13) Tartus County 773,000 inhabitants
14) Al-Quneitra County 356,000 inhabitants

Health


Syria is a healthy country and provided with modern medical equipment, where complicated and delicate surgical operations can be performed.

Hospitals:
Each city has Government free Hospitals and Medical Centers, in addition to the Private Hospitals. In principle no inoculations are required. No particular precautions need to be taken.

Water:
Water distributed in the cities and a large number of villages are very suitable for drinking and brushing teeth. Besides, you can buy mineral, purified, and bottled water.

Policy



Syria has a republican regime, and the full name is Syrian Arab Republic (SYR). The President is Bashshar Hafez Al-Assad.

"The Ba'th Arab Socialist Party " is the leader party in Syria since March 1963 A.D. " Al-Ba'th " and the other political parties united in "the National Progressive Front “, led by "Al-Ba'th" Party. There is also a 250 member "People's Council “.

The Country is divided into 14 counties, which in turn are subdivided into smaller units.
